| | Am I screwed? I bought 4 Steam copies believing license management would be infinitely simpler if the game was linked to a Steam account, such as with Modern Warfare 2 and various other popular games. I've read the other Bad Company 2 thread, but I'm not sure if this will work quite the same way for Steam. If anyone is in the same boat and has been able to figure something out, let me know! [EDIT] I should add that someone seems to have registered one of our keys to their own EA account before I discovered how ridiculous the licensing for this game is with Steam. I guess I'm out of luck with that account now?

| Steam is a distribution platform. The game retains the same DRM as a physical retail copy. However without a physical disc the only method is to activate it online. With this game there is a 10 activation limit. So once your keys have been activated on 10 machines, they will not activate any more. Tie this to a LM system that potentially assigns each key to every machine, and you're shafted.
We got retail copies, ripped a disc image to authenticate against instead of online, and it's working great.

| | Hello Eric, How did you get the license distribution part going? I got the server to kick out the "GameSettings" file to %MyDocuments% but I can't get it to give out "GameSettings1" "GameSettings2" etc. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thx |

| Could you explain how you made the image, i tried making an image with Alcohol but the game kept rejecting the image saying I shouldn't use a backup disc...
Edit:
Could it be that I'm using an old version of daemontools...version 4.12 |

| The disc check for this one of the simpler secuROM implementations, it should be fairly easy to create an image. I used Alcohol 52% and worked the first time. If your image isn't working, update Daemon, and possibly redo the image on a lower speed setting, or use another PC with a different model or brand of CDROM.
I have a custom licensing utility that was written that swaps out the gamesettings.bin in mydocs. The filename is passed as the license parameter from SL, which tells the utility what to copy to the PC. If you would like the utility we sell our LM solutions ala-carte for $100.

| | Hello Eric, I am interested in your program just as long as I can easily integrate it with smartlaunch. How do I purchase your license distribution program and what other games does it work with? BigH |

| | I can confirm that the image is working. I too used Alcohol 52% (trial version), selected Image Making Wizard, Datatype Securom, Mesuring speed 4x (but others probably will work), format (mds). |

| You can take your Bad Company 2 Steam based accounts and use them with the EA down loader. You can get it at: http://tinyurl.com/ydoxynd. We did this very thing and it works great without using Steam at all. What you will end up doing is launching bfbc2updater.com after the install, very easy and I would be happy to provide more details should anyone need them.

| Hi Alomax,
I like your method for setting BFBC2 up. I have a question for you. How do you handle the PUf files for each SL user? Also does your method allow for online multi-player use? When I choose to play online I am requested to login to my EA account and therefor any progress I achieve is tied to that account.
Thanks for your help |
