| We had the same problem with the Demo...Are you experiencing the same?
We updated one computer, then copied the whole directory to the other computers. The game would run fine, until you tried to go into an internet game. Then, it would crash. To fix we:
- Run Steam
- Verify Cache Integrity
- 1 or 2 files will come up invalid
- Let Steam re-download those files (wait 2 mins, its automatic)
- Closeout Steam
- Re-Launch Steam, let Steam decrypt the downloaded files.
- Launch L4D2 and join internet game to verify that the game is working properly now.
It's a pain in the butt, but it works for now.

| | Easier way. Copy the .ncf files for l4d2 in the steamapps folder, try running online then, should work if not then do the verify thing. |

| I have spend several days trying to figure this one out. After verify, the game runs flawlessly and no crashes. After reboot, the CTD happends again.
It is infact due to the new anti piracy scheme introduced by steam: http://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/news/1051534/a-closer-look-valve-ceg
When you install L4D2 the first time. 2 unique files are created with an encryption scheme:
Steam\steamapps\common\left 4 dead 2\left4dead2\bin\Client.dll
When you change account the uniquely generated files dosnt match with the new account and the game crashes to desktop.

| The problem here is that the client.dll is getting corrupted even if you use only one computer with a specific steam ID after restart it. So even their drm gone wrong and needs validation each time you start the game and their activation servers getting overloaded or its not activated correctrly.
I have reported that issue with the client.dll to valve support from the first day but they havent responded yet..
Who knows...
But the strange is that the first left 4 dead works without any problem and it has exactly the same protection.
Have no F3aR -=Rudd-o=- is here !!!

We have the game running on most computers now so I do not fully buy into this explination. We have some computers that verify all files now, after verifing over and over. It still works on the ones that always find client.dll as bad. Someone also stated that the game saves a couple files in your windows directory, which we normaly keep frozen but had to unfreeze for the game to install properly. We also had to exit SL completely when installing to prevent the decrypting thing from looping. We launched the game outside SL afew times, reboot, relaunch before trying it inside SL, reboot try it insid SL again before freezing the OS drive. After around 40 hours of work we have the game working about 90% with a few crashes here and there. |

| | If the client.dll file is causing issues, has anyone tried deleting this on user login so it is recreated on launch of steam thru the SL license management? |

| | Just to point out, our pc's are deep frozen, but we aren't getting any CTD problems, all that happens is steam downloads like a couple mb when a new account logs in to edit the client.dll. I use my own account the lan centre all the time and suffer no issues, and the SL licensing for our 10 steam cafe accounts transfer from pc to pc fine with no problems, maybe its something to do with deep freeze? |

| | I don't think so. If you have no crashing at all then I suspect that you might use ATI video cards because none of my ATI computers seem to crash but a lot, but not all of the Nvidia based systems crash. In any case the problem is the game is bugged. http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1034962 |
