Hi guys!

I need your help, so please be kind and answer as soon as possible
For few years now I have been handling a café on my own, and I installed games individually on each PC. Im sure all of you know its not an easy thing to do all the time, and I have come to the point where I can no longer do it because I'm fed up.
For some reason I have always considered that method to be most effective, and didnt think about other options. Then I bumped on a thread where people say they use single server as a host for games, which people run trough network.
If I could implement that in my café it would help me oh so much.. But the problem is i dont know anything about it (how to setup, what hardware to use and so on).
I have been saving some money and the server seems like a great investment. So could please someone that knows about these things help me with these questions:

1. What OS to use on server? (Win server 2008? , you just intall the games on one of its disks?)
2. What hardware to use? (If someone would be so kind to give me a configuration I could give to my retailer to get it for me) (what processor, NIC, how much ram? how much disk for 20-25 clients..)
3. When i get the server do I also need 1mb network cables and switches to connect all the computers to the server? (i think its obvious but..)
4. How big disks do you need on client PC then when youre running games from server?
5. I was thinking to install commonly used games souch as CS,WC3 and some singleplayer games that dont need updates on clients to lower the load on server? Is that a good idea?

Please help guys. If I dont solve this soon I'm going to have to close my Café because the stress of installing the games is just too much to handle for me nowdays..

my server setup is the following:

c2d 6300, 3gb ram. 160gb for win 2k3 server os and for storage i have 2 arrays, the 1st is 8x640gb@raid50 on promise ex8650 controller and a second 3x1tb on onboard ich controller... 2gbit nic (intel dual server)

you will obviously need 1gbit lan connection

250-320gb hdds for the clients is ok

all popular games is better to be preinstalled on the clients. the others get transfered on demand to the clients (not really played from the server directly, it can be done but its better to have them transfered)

Hello Voudas!
Im really thankful for your reply, it pretty much summed it up for me. Thanks again!
However, as you can see I'm not that experienced at this, and I dont understand why do you need souch large amount of disk space on the server?
The reason I wanted a server is for the clients to run games from it (except the most popular ones). Is it really a bad idea to run them from there? I am willing to invest in network infrastructure just to make it work..

Looking forward to your reply.

@ Oleg: I tried to register to your site but sadly never received your confirmation e-mail. Not in bulk either. I'll try again later.

-edit- I managed to reg on another email

I have a question Oleg, from what I've seen on your site, Gizmo looks really nice. If I understood correctly, it is able to install games from a centralized server on demand and update them when needed?
So for example, if I want COD4 installed on all of my machines, I just send out a command and it will copy/install them as fast as the network allows?

Some games run from the server without issue.  Others you are better off leaving on the client.  This is what we use for up to 25 systems.

We use an old duel core P4 for our sever with server 2003.  The game drive 2 sata 250 gig drives in raid 0 using onboard raid and 2 gigs of RAM.  The servers connect to the switch at 1000 and the clients connect at 100.  We simpley map the drive to the clients and point SL to the share.  Nothin fancy as far as hardware or setup. For games like World of Warcraft that is all that is needed.

For games that need registry entries install the game to the server from a client computer.  The client you install from will need the registry entries pertaining to the game imported to the other clients.   Most games run really well and load fine with this setup even though the server is just an old PC with server 2003.  It is not processing anything, just transfering files.
