| We recently decided to do some upgrades in our cafe. We restored all our computers from known clean working backup, installed Vista SP2, upgraded firefox, installed flash 10 etc. Along with these updates was the newest Smartlaunch client. All of a sudden, all the client machines are just... EXTREMELY unstable. Some of the occuring symptoms are as follows:
-I have seen 5-6 times a client machine logged in as admin, Smartlaunch would just disappear, no message, no warning. The computer wasnt even doing anything at the time. I just heard the audio message "A client computer has disconnected" I investigated to find no smartlaunch tray icon, and smartlaunch was not running at all.
-Lots of times, smartlaunch will do the same as above, while users are logged in. Whatever game they are running, usually continues, but the admin computer registers as disconnected, while the user is still in game.
-More seriously, lots of computers will now fail to boot up with smartlaunch. Some will sit on the "Please Wait" vista boot screen indefinitely. I tracked this down to the smartlaunch client crashing when asked to start as the computers shell. I diagnosed this, after rebooting it 3-4 times, each time the same thing happened (froze at "please wait" screen) The last time, i disconnected the Ethernet cable, preventing the client from connecting to the server, and it booted fine that time. This happens randomly, and has happened to various computers.
Has anyone else experienced similar problems with the newest client, or perhaps with Vista SP2? Its hard to say exactly which upgrade is causing these problems.

| Hey,
I did have some issues but they happed to be with Flash...
A few questions however, have you tweaked your systems at all?, have you added alot of things to the CLIENT folder on your SL Server installation, I know one of the things that can cause a freeze/overall lockup is attempts to transfer files*, System specs?, x32 or x64, standard installation of SL Client or custom (installation folder ectera), also have you disabled IPv6 (both server/admin/client side), really a terrible implementation, sometimes the client will search for the server (you could try manually entering the information in the CFG file... or is it INF... anyway) and die their...
A few other things I cant really think of at the moment...

| >>>A few questions however, have you tweaked your systems at all?
No, no tweaks have been applied. All system services are running as Bill G intended.
>>>have you added alot of things to the CLIENT folder on your SL Server installation, I know one of the things that can cause a freeze/overall lockup is attempts to transfer files*
Nope, only one line in system startup, and it is a command to start the Realtek audio manager, since we have been having some trouble with headset volume, and we need this to be accessible. No files are transfered or anything fancy.
>>> x32 or x64
x32
>>>standard installation of SL Client or custom (installation folder ectera)
Standard install. Installed to C:/Program FIles/Smartlaunch Client as it should be
>>>also have you disabled IPv6 (both server/admin/client side), really a terrible implementation, sometimes the client will search for the server (you could try manually entering the information in the CFG file... or is it INF... anyway) and die their...
I will consider trying this, but find it hard to believe this could cause such a thing, due to the randomness of its occurance. Sometimes it happens, sometimes not. Sometimes it happens WHILE its running, and already connected to the server.
I would believe it to be Flash related, but its been upgraded to the most recent flash (10) So unless the new smartlaunch has some trouble with flash10?

| Don't see anything out of the ordinary in the logs, however I may be looking in the wrong place. Looked at the log using the administrator. Is there a physical logfile on the clients or server I should be looking at instead?

| Seems I lied, there are odd entries in the log. A computer is failing to come on right now, and an error log entry is logged as follows:
Set variable (ComputerDetails) failed. Description: System.IndexOutOfRangeException: Index was outside the bounds of the array.

| This error happens on server due the client module not sending all the information correctly. I cant think of is maybe you have ipv6 or something and client dose not obtain ip info correctly.

| | Check for viruses also, just in case. I have seen weird problems with Smartlaunch that were caused by viruses. |
