I used to run steam from my install directory (d:\games\steam) but figured it was easier to just launch it from my LAN (mapped drive Y:\steam) that way I only need to update 1 client, 1 game at 1 location for all my users to have updated files.

However.... One thing I noticed that annoys me, is with SL license management all the map downloads for all the games would be stored under the used name/pass and therefore not sure that even if they used the same machine or anything that they could use the same maps again.

Is there a way to use a default download location for all users of a specific game? (say, all my 40 valve licenses download maps to \steam\maps, instead of \steam\steamapps\userid\counter-strike source\c-strike\maps)

I am trying to avoid keep downloading maps all over again everytime a client goes online...

I dont have an answer for you unfortunately but I was wondering, do you notice any network latency problems by running the games across the LAN rather than locally? We just purchased Steam for cafes and are about to implement it within the next few days so I am looking at options right now for installation..

Not that im giving you a solution now but there will be one in Gizmo. Even steam personal user files will be supported.
We going to open a discussion on a subject on this in our forum so if you have time and will to discuss the problem you are more than welcome.

We don't run our games directly from our mapped drive (though WoW works that way, along with a lot of the free mmo's. We never thought to test Steam games like this) but I assume this will work for you anyway.

We imaged our PC's with all of our custom maps in the TT_Tracker_Common folder. That eliminated the need for our users to redownload our gungame maps for the CS server. I also kept a folder on our network drive with the most current maps so I could just run a batch file and copy them if some popular new one came out. In your case, I don't see why throwing new maps in the tt tracker common folder wouldn't work.

Let me know if it does! We have had a shitty time updating steam stuff every week thanks to deepfreeze so I might have to try running steam from a network drive like you.

I can advertise for my solution here again. Think it's been mentioned a couple of times in the past in various steamrelated topics. (maybe also on steam for cafe forums)

In short. I use junction. This tells windows to redirect all trafic to the individual steam folders to one folder. Namely TTracker_Common folder. This means if you browse to your individual folders like valvelicense01, in fact you open TTracker_Common folder. So regardless if I have 4 licenses or 50. I'll only have one TTracker_Common folder, and all the individual folders pointing to that folder. This is locally on the machine btw. But it means you can run all licenses - locally, with only data for one folder.

MedieOasen,

I can't thank you enough for this solution. I had not even realized my custom gungame maps had to be downloaded every single time since steam went back to giving us individual accounts. I brought our gungame server back up and people complained.

Now every map/sound used on our LAN server is on the individual PC's and junction is working exactly as you described. I'm sure there are many other uses for this and I hope SL admins are keeping an eye on this. SL 5 needs to make pufs/license management work better and smarter.

Looks pretty GREAT ^^... I found the program to help create the junctions, Junction(v1.05) on MS's TechNet here's the link to the page.
Junction (v1.05)(By Mark Russinovich)(Published: July 24, 2007)
How to create and manipulate NTFS junction points (Article ID: 205524 - Last Review: February 20, 2007 - Revision: 3.3)

MedieOasen, I don't suppose you would mind going into detail on how to link all of the steam account folders to the one "TT_Tracker_Common" folder which was what was used before we moved from VTT system to the individual accounts(<_<)? that would be great.

from userlogin.bat in SL I call the junction.bat wich is placed in the steam/steamapps folder. (along with junction itself)

Junction.bat contains

d:\steam\steamapps\junction.exe d:\steam\steamapps\yourcafePC1 d:\steam\steamapps\ttracker_common
d:\steam\steamapps\junction.exe d:\steam\steamapps\yourcafePC2 d:\steam\steamapps\ttracker_common
d:\steam\steamapps\junction.exe d:\steam\steamapps\yourcafePC3 d:\steam\steamapps\ttracker_common

for as much as you have licenses.
