Gah... one of the computers at work just bought the ticket (mine that is)...The computer hangs when it loads the BIOS so i'm guessing it is the Motherboard that gone to the never ending silicone heaven...

So im going out to buy a new motherboard tomorrow so for a day or two one i'm missing from Development and support. This might be a good chance to install Vista 64 bit also, running with 3+ Visual Studios takes it toll.

Anyway... I'm glad it wasn't my Hard drive... sheees...

Another Question...

Is there a way I can config the keys to logging in admin from client computers?

Some kids found out the keys to accessing the login windows..

for instance..

window key + esc activates the admin login window..

can I change the this to some other key?

Anyone who has similar experience, would you be able to share with me

ways to prevent this kinda problems??

I've just established an internet cafe and started using SL
This is the first time so I have just several questions.
Hope anyone who has experience can answer it! :D

- How can I make a report of how much I earned today.
e.g. the amount that clients payed on that date.

- I want to have an option on the application menu for Mouse Controls
I know at the start it already is on the menu but I've deleted it, now I want it back..

- Where can I get free posters? largest possible...
We've managed to print out A0 sizes but its very costly here,,,

Hi, I saw a website of a net cafe, which had a nice feaure to make the customers come back again. They had a table with the best players of of each game.

Does any have any idea how I can achieve this. i.e. how can I get the score of someones game.
The issue here is with the RPG games or FPS in multiplayer mode.

Problems a day

How many problems do does the average cafe go through a day? Like, where you have to restart from SL or even have to restart from the computer. I seem to have about 5 or 6 on a regular day and 10 or more on a busy day. I regularly check and maintain my computers also. I would so most of the time its user error. They either open a million windows, press ctrl,alt, delete a million times and they go hey its not working. I say it didnt work the first time what made you think it was going to work the 100th time. But, sometimes the computer just plain farts out and i have to manually restart at the computer not SL. Im just curious if you all have problems too or am I the only one?

I have no idea why but our cafe has a lot of kid clients. Id say over half our customers are kids. Which i see as 13 and under. And its really starting to drive me nuts and aggrevating the hell out of me. Some not knowing how to play some not knowing what to do. I show them and tell them the best I can but they just get annoying cause they change games every 5 min after i just described how to play a game. So i m just waisting my breath. Does anybody else get this many kids in your cafe? Or am i the only one. My lease for my building has a little less than 2 years left and when its up at this point i will not continue my cafe. I find dealing with the majority of customers as kids, simply pointless.

I have seen and visited other cafes around my area and I dont see any kids in their place. I want to know if its just me or does everybody have this? Please let me know.

What I'm asking is how long did it take you (or how much time do you expect) to recover your total investment into the gaming center, before taxes? In other words, from the time you opened, how long did it take (or will it take) for you to break even, before taxes?

Employee Game Time..

Gang,

I'm trying to get a bead on how other manage this monster, with smartlaunch our just policy. I have a couple of questions

1. Do most set up seperate acccounts for employees and require them to use that account to track thier game time only. and a seperate account to work under for shop activities, demo's etc.

2. How much game time do you allow before charging a employee for the time?

3. Has anyone went with the policy "No Gamming aloud during work hrs", and allow the employee to play in thier off hrs, and break/launch time?

Any suggestions/thoughts appreciated.

Ok, heres the breakdown...

My wife and I want to set up a cyber café... she will take up the deli/café part and I will be in charge of the game center...

im thinking that 8 computers is a good start... and possibly add 8 more during the next year if space requirements are met and all that... I got word that smartlaunch is all i need to manage the system... however i still have some questions in mind... for instance, if I use Smartlaunch's POS can I use it to sell anything else... ?? like... a sandwich? coffee cup? tea? floppy disks? etc. etc. etc.

I was also wondering about the 8 pc's number... is 8 computers good enough if I am planning to go with shooter games like half-life, counterstrike or Fear?

I have seen many many things online, from pictures and more stuff like that... and I am very pumped up about this. I know my wife and I will take off with this business and that it will be amazing, but I can't shake the thing i got for asking a lot and wanting to be reeeeeaaaallllllly suuure about anything i do.

I live in Puerto Rico and over here this is a relatively new concept. While i know there is a vast gaming base out there, we could have a bit of an issue getting to them. So i plan to have an aggressive marketing scheme to achieve that and let everyone know I'm there.

But first I would like for those of you who already have a running and successful business, to tell me about it and share any comments or advice you may have regarding the stuff to keep in mind... for things like the headphone discussion, that was enlightening! Now i really know I might make a custom way to make sure those headphones are glued to the jacks and don't come out for any reason! :D Maybe allowing gamers or users to consume drinks or food at the consoles... (i know it is a bad idea... >_<) things like that!

Don't want to read the story, alright. You can respond for the licenses by either replaying or sending a email to Qwiegybow04@yahoo.com. With SL licenses as the subject. I don't know what used licenses go far so just make me an offer. We also have a 72 manage port switch up for sale as well. It fits nicely in a rack mount space. And we also have a rack mount lcd screen and keyboard and mouse 1U slide out as well. With a KVM switch. Interested in any of those drop me a line.

We opened up with 40 computers and dreams and hopes that we would attract high schoolers , college students and above all else, gamers. What unfolded was the very opposite end of that spectrum. Original we had 40 computers. After a few months, and lots of asking, we got xboxs. This was before 360 mind you. Upon closing we had 35 computers and 2 xbox 360s.

Let me start off by saying that Smartlaunch was a wonderful tool. Although not perfect, it was certainly better than any other cyber cafe software I had looked at. Its too bad they are just now coming out with the electrical cut off switch thingys. Could have used those on the xbox. And 4.1 was a drastic, and welcomed, change over 3.6. I always found this forum and the people on it very very helpful and understanding. I never maximized it to its full potential but if i had to restart, I would. The only problem I really have is, that its not stupid proof on the client computers. I couldn't tell you how many times people would double click the internet button and it would freeze the computer or internet browser. Also right click close locked up our computers ever time as well. And people still clicked start game twice even though a loading game screen would come up. Sometimes the game took longer and when it disappeared, then they would click start game again loading another version of the game. UGGGGGH!

On to the woes... For anybody thinking about starting up a gaming center or cafe you might want to read this.

First, if your thinking about doing this for just internet access, STOP, STOP RIGHT NOW. Unless you live somewhere where internet is a premium, their is way too many places now offering free access. Almost all colleges, even communities have a free computer lap, even some high schools have computer laps. Public libraries and even restaurants now offer free internet and/or free wifi. Theres just no way you can compete with free. You will lose every time. Yeah you may get the occasional person that needs it right now and has no other choice, but for the most part they will find a way to get a computer or internet for free.

Second, and this will depend on where you open, the clients, for the most part, was ALL kids. I'm talking 8 - 15. Yes, I got a few college and high schoolers but for the most party they were little kids, which I hated. And when I would get older people that wanted to stay for the lock-ins they would take one look, see all the kids and immediately leave or cancel their reservation. I couldn't put an age restriction because then i wouldn't have anybody. So unless you absolutely like kids, and or put your place right next to a high school you are probably gonna have lots of kids. And most hardcore games, have their own rig anyway...

Third, Moore's Law. The computer industry and changing faster than ever and getting cheaper each year. More and more people are buying their on computers. So your brand spankin new 1200 dollar computer is outdated and outperformed usually in 6 months to a year. When we bought all of our computers back in 2004 we got the latest and the greatest and it was about 1200 a computer.
Specs: AMD 64 3200+ (64bit chips JUST came out when we bought them) 1GB of ddr[b]1[u][/u][/b] Ram 120GB IDE HDD. Radeon 9800 256mb AGP (yes AGP).
Compare that to today's specs... yeah I know.
Couldn't tell you how many times some kid would come in after we haven't seen them in a while and say oh i don't come often because we bought a brand new top of the line computer and its better than yalls.
I must say even to the end our computers could run the latest games, just not at max specs or on high.
Playing the catch up game or lets upgrade our hardware is IMPOSSIBLE. Or you will go broke trying. At least, on a scale of 35 computers to upgrade. Now if you have 5 thats much more doable.... you get my point. Theirs no way to win. You have to budget for upgrades over periods of time or suffer to Moore's law.

Fourth, Games. I would say most of all the money we spent went into buying games. Oh, dear lord. Just do 50 X 35... yeah. And licensing is a pain in the *** with most companies. A few have them clearly posted ie. Steam and Blizzard. Others do not. Ubisoft is supposed to have one but they NEVER responded to my e-mails. Others I just couldn't find. Steam wanted 10 bucks a month per computer.... uhh no. I ll be honest right now. I never paid it. I bought a game per computer and had 35 steam accounts. Worked just fine. No way was i going to pay 350 a month. Blizzards is just down right ridiculous. For the ammount of computers and games we wanted to install they wanted 1k a month. Umm thats not a no. Thats a FU$# NO!
Even worse yet the kids only played 3 games the whole time we opened to close the top 3 in order of played time. CS:S, World of Warcraft, Battlefield 2. Somebody would occasionally play one besides that for like 10 mins and then go back to one of those 3. If I would have know this I would have only opened up with maybe 4 games instead of 20. Yeah I tried giving people options but instead I wasted a lot of money. And I got tired of buying each no game that people wanted. So for Id say the greater part of a year I didn't buy any games.. at all. Every time somebody said you should get this i said ok, with no intentions of ever getting it. I would just be wasting my money on that new game. I started buying maybe 3 copies of a game installing the game on ever computer and setup SL to let 3 people online and the rest would have to play locally. Just got waaaaay too expensive. My advice. Pick maybe the top 5 games and go with that, then look into other games only if they are very very popular.

Fifth and last, i know its long. Internet. The price for business internet is also ridiculous. When I wasn't buying new games this was the biggest utility bill I had. Ive posted this before but how some of you get away with T1 which is 1.5 down divided by like 30 computes is beyond something I will every understand. Just do the math, I don't see how you got away with a T1. I know that not EVERYBODY will be on the internet at the same time. But I tell you, at just about every lockend we had id say their was always about 70% either playing a online game or on the internet. I ended up getting 2 lines of business class roadrunner each with 4mb down. I put them both through a special router that would manage both lines so that the 35 computers were using both lines equally. Technically splitting 8MB down into 40 possible locations. This worked out pretty well most times even with everybody on the internet at the same time. Yet it cost us a arm and a leg at about 800 bucks a month for internet.

So their it is folks. Our lease was up August 31st and I had no intentions of renewing it. If you think you can still overcome all these issues, by all means go for it. I really do wish you the best of luck, its not easy to turn a profit, thats for sure. Otherwise I would think hard twice before going forth. If I knew this is what I was getting into I'm pretty sure I would have stopped long before I opened up. I'm not saying their were never good times. Sure, I had some fun times and a blast lots of times. I had my friends working for me and we would always just dick around to pass the time. But overall it was a great learning experience with a huge wallet buster. Thanks for taking the time to read. Hope some of you can relate and know exactly what I'm talking about.

With that out of the way, is it just my cafe or do people really like stealing the foam balls off microphones? Within a day of putting out all new microphone headsets, half were gone. And then everyone else complains about the balls being missing. People are hillarious.

Hi everyone. WE need to arange a Call Of Duty 2 tournament. Since we are new to the bussiness i have to ask were to start. How do we set up the teams? how many persons per team? (we have 20 pc's) and dont mind closing a day for everyone else just to have the tournament. Is it better to have it as Team deathmatch or just deathmatch? (the only problem with teams is the prizes that i can think of) And how much should one charge for entering the tournament? (our current price is 2.50 per hour)

What have we become? Society, today, has become the instant gratification age. Ever customer I get wants what they want now and not later. Espically kids. People need to learn that computers don't work on the now census. It sometimes take a few seconds for a game or something to load.

The point of my story is that customers don't take the time to read the little notes you can put for each game. For some odd reason Quake 4 multiplayer doesn't work on our computers. Ive tried everything but you ll just hang there if you get in a internet room, anyways thats besides the point. So in the notes section I made it clear that I didn't know why it didnt work but that it wouldnt if they tried. So i said this game only works in singleplayer mode. Yet at least 3 times a week somebody gets on it and goes hey whats wrong with the multiplayer. I have to apologize that it doesn't work and then i tell them that before they click start game theres a section where theres usually some important notes. And he just goes oh ok but then never reads them.

And at least once a day i ll get somebody to try and get on WoW and they dont have an account. Then they wonder why its not working. I tell them they have to have their own account and its explained in detail in the description area right before they click start game.

There are various other problems that arise from this but those are the main ones. I think the problem is the font is too small. Its hard to just pick up on if your browing through the games. Maybe the SL team can increas the size or have a little flashing or spinning sign next to description. Just something to point to it so everybody just doesn't jump right in and then wonder why they can't play or don't know what they are playing.

Alienware Case

Ok, I know some people that own a cyber cafe have bought all alienware computers to use in their cafe. So if you didnt buy alienware computers or don't know somebody that did you can stop reading now or you can keep reading if you are just curious.

I was wonder if somebody that bought all alienware computers if they wouldn't mind selling me one and or trading. Im talking about the new predator case not the old one. I just love their case and it sucks that you can't buy it sepratly. I would have bought a computer from them but I love building my own computer. If someone has a spare one lying around or wants to take a computer out and put it in my case as a trade thats cool too. I m willing to also pay you for the case as well. $50 60 maybe maybe a 100 bucks for it but probably nothing over than that. Please only do this if you are willing to sell me one and or trade. You don't have to do this if you dont want to. I just really love their case and this probably the only means i could get one. I have tried ebay but they run for $300 + and theres very very few ever up there. I dont care what color it is.

Well well if today wasnt already a bad day. (Long story) I get an e-mail from E3 today saying that I was not accepted for the package 5 to attened E3. Last year I went to E3 on the package 5 deal. For those of you that don't know E3 is the best thing in the freakin world and package 5 is the (free package). This year they took off cyber cafes for package 5. Now all of us that own and operate our lovely cyber cafes have to spend a whooping 500 big ones to attend. Some of you may say, hell id pay anything to go. Well yeah I guess I would too, but after you already went for free its a huge downer to have to pay. heh.

Im deciding if its really worth it. Hope I didnt crush some of yalls dreams. For those who havent been, I think its something that you have to experiance at least once in your life. Its very thrilling. (You wont have seen so many plasmas and big screens in one place. :) )

Best wishes to all , Good sucess in 2006 , and a special Thanks to SL team.
When we started this business in may 2005 it was just another business process.
We developed it and went ahead as Noobs.
Only one supplier in our location uses SL , and on seeing it we knew our way forwards. Many times we have been asked 'What made 'you' open a Lan/Net Cafe'.
SL ,and this BB, has been the one ray of light in this entire process and six months in we know we can drive this business to success.
I thought I would post here some pics for us all to share but I dont have any yet.
Thanks also to the members for your diligent pursual of the result we r all seeking and the shareing of knowledge.

Isn't it odd when you have many users in a support forum with more posts than the moderators (except adam, he seems to post more often than the rest of the moderators combined)?

Now on to something more important. What up-and-coming games seem worthwhile? Call of Duty 2? Battlefield 2: Special Forces? Fear?

I'm the biggest spammer on these forums, at least for today. I'm just helping the team out with whatever I can assist others with and I hope the team doesn't mind. I'm sure Michael and the gang would want a little time off after re-doing the whole website and finishing up SL4.
