To paraphrase Steve Jobs, do what you do best, don’t try to be everything to everyone.

Clear your misconceptions, hit reset and get it right this time.

1. Make your product something people want.
Smartlaunch is an app that locks/unlocks pcs and calculates the bill. That’s it. That is the product and nothing matters as much as this. Yet in its buffling complexity, it cant even do that right. Build a solid core and don’t waste time. Use drupal as a server and make the client a web page wrapped in a windows app. Simple stuff, infinitely expandable, rock solid.

2. Build a platform. Anyone and their dog can join.
Securities, extra skins, premade application settings, windows tweaks, exotic reports, automated alerts, web services integration, custom devices support, filtering&firewalls, landing on mars...
These are not your core business. These are addons, addons to your platform.
A platform that you sell at a price-point for optimum reach.
Addons that you sell based on what people actually value, what they’re willing to pay for. Let other developer’s time be wasted on trivial features.

2. Put your money where your mouth is.
Your human resources are your most valuable asset. By far.
Sell your time, your unique knowledge of the platform is your recurring income. Every hotshot entrepreneur opening a net cafe will need your support to make it.
Sell your support.

To wrap this up, build a platform around tried & true open source web technologies. Don’t go on forever debugging windows, you don’t have time for that. Build a simple, reliable, elegant core that does that one thing right. Make it dev friendly for everyone to join your mission. Price it extremely aggressively, demolish competition. Monetize on a constant flow of feature addons, build your Smartlaunch app store if you will. This will also focus the time you spend on new features exactly where it’s needed, where people are cashing out for. Sell support in every form, you are the kings of the platform and your time isn’t cheap.

Time and Balance NEED to be seperated

We are a cafe that lets users run balances / tabs / negatives and SL's POS/Accounting system just doesn't make too much sense for a cafe like this.

If you operate only on prepaid time, etc, it works well. But Sl users should have an option on startup to choose a config type or just change the system to keep time and balance seperate.

for example: If a user comes up and puts $4 on his account for 1 hour, it should put an hour on there and thats it. If he buys a chocolate bar on his 'tab', it put thats in a -$1.. when he clears up, he owes $1 and keeps his hour - Instead of the SL system which would balance out the $1 owing with his our, only giving him 45 mins. If there is something I am doing wrong in the process, please let me know. But as I see it - the two colums are directly related and shouldn't be.

The problem is when a kid comes up and has a bunch of hours and time in hand, and looks on the client and sees ' hey, I only owe $10 and still have 2 hrs' and then when they come to settle up they get the shock of the till guy saying 'oh, you owe more money if you want to keep the 2 hrs you have'. The kids budget for what they have on the screen and don't correlate the two as an overall balance, and that the hours are WORTH time on their account - that they have 2 seperate things to consider. I shouldn't have to inform them either. If they have 2 hours, they have that. Period. If they racked up 20 chocolate bars for $20 - that should be it. I can disable the 'pay from account' option to my staff so they just pay for whatever merchandise they rack up and keep their hours - and I make it a policy once hours are paid, there is no exchanging, account, etc...

I am pretty sure there are many other cafe's that operate like mine..

License Number Preference

I was wondering if it was possible to add a function to the server for it to remember the first account someone plays on and try to preference them that account for a certain game all the time and maybe a top 3 that way they more likely to get an account over steam for example that the have played b4. Saves having to out lay so may saved game locations and PUF's.

Anyone else think this maybe beneficial?

Firstly, SL is an amazing software, practically caters for everything, however i had never managed to control customers from installing junk, torrents p2p bla bla! Bout 2 months ago 1 came across deepfreeze, which freezes your pc state, and i found the combination of SL and DF unstoppable!! Havent had to service any pc on the network in 2 months! Try it!! =)

Adding data to "internet services" output

Hi guys at SL, is there any chance we could have the waiting line included in the output made by the SL server in "internet services"

I've got this page running on a secondary monitor at the desk making it possible for customers to get an overview of the current situation, but it doesn't reflect if there are people in the waiting line. Would be cool if we could get the waiting line usernames output to the data.dat file thus having them incorporated in the page to show the actual situation and more precise times for new customers. (and who are on the waiting line, and not least, who's FIRST on it - while they are waiting :D

So obv it would need to be the username from the waiting line, and the waiting line "status" wich would then always reflect the current waiting line situation. (and update if they get moved around for whatever reason)

I know the design ain't too shabby yet, but wanted to make sure it was "complete" before actually locking it in place in some design. And pref. with a section for waiting line too :)

Member Cards

How about adding a member card design and print function for plastic cards with barcode on them and picture of member taken with a webcamera connected to the workstation. Would be much easier for a employer to just zap the barcode... i know there is some mag slip function but what about printing fully designed membercards from the sytstem with a plastic card printer?

I think it would be an awesome touch to the software :)

Top 5 Suggestions for Updates to 4.1

1. Improve the offer creation:
A) Allow creation of coupons
B) Allow creation of bundled offers (aka. 1 snack and 1 drink of consumer choice)
C) Instead of max amount of time you can use on weekdays and weekends, add this capability for each day separately
D) Allow specific day exceptions to time usage. For example, while we may have offers for weekdays that are cheaper, we may want to disable this discounted time for when kids are out of school, without removing the time from their account. This is HUGE.
E) Account types have better subscription based workings. Somebody can pay for multiple months or renew before expiration.

2. Improve the email notices. Add capability for emailing inactive users automatically. You have X time, come visit! This is HUGE. Add ability to opt out.

3. Allow users to update their profile information and other specific account settings:
A) AFK Auto-Logout
B) Temporary Lock. Allow users to temporarily lock their computers when they go AFK. A user would not be auto AFK logged out.
C) Credit Card information for auto charging (Paypal based?). This is also HUGE for game center success.
D) Birthday information must be edited by employee.

4. Allow pre-paid tickets with monetary value that can only be used for certain things. For example, we want to make gift cards for time only, NOT snacks.

5. Improve the news interface. Make it more apparent and easier to browse.

6. Add wireless network capability for users to bring laptops.

FIX BUGS!
A) Selecting the steam license management on an application crashes the server
B) Client interface randomly stops responding or all buttons disappear
C) Allow transactions to be voided if they were made using money off an account
D) Ringing up an item via scan while a user account is open will generate a bug report

Account Transfer

1- is it possible to let the customer transfer his account from pc to another lets say this customer is setting in pc-02 after he wants to sit in pc-30 if so if he entered his username and password in pc-30 it will ask him " you already logged to pc-02 do you want to transfer?" if click on yes then it will automatic logout him from pc-02 and transfer his account to pc-30.

2- let the customer make safty for logout, why that? some of our customers wants togo to bathroom without loosing his seat, the problem some of the waiting customers log him off and take his seat so if there is lets say check mark next to the logout button that if it checked it will ask him for the password when he press logout this check mark canbe unchecked if he entered the password too. offcoure even if it checked the cashier have the power to log him off from the administrator module.

Multiple custom Steam groups

Since more and more games seem to run over Steam, the ability to configure multiple clusters of custom steam logins in the license manager could be useful, to have one group of steam account settings for each game if needed.

Merely using a product key seems to have gone out of style, so it's getting difficult to manage the games, which limits the games we can buy, a working auto-login function in license control might help with it.

Ok, I've asked about / requested this before already and I've never heard anything about this, so I'm taking this topic up again...

I NEED to have a checkbox / information area for the new SL-users when they log on. The purpose is to get the approval for using their contact information for marketing purposes. I don't do a shit with SL mailing-features, if I'm not allowed to use our members information without their approval u know ;). At least this should be implemented in SL 5 and this is a very important "feature" for me.

As I have complained about earlier, the POS (not piece of sh, but point of sale) is not usable in SL, furthermore I have some things that none seem to have figured at SL.

First and foremost. For us to be able to service costumers as fast and efficient we need a POS that works! period!
It has to be touch screen, with large icons, preferably able to costumize position/size of them. I use EZ Power POS 9 from Denverresearch.com ritght now, alongside SL on the same touch screen. Does it work? Sure, but I´d like 1 program to handle POS, license management as well as client hours. Forget about mentioning barcode scanners and whatnot, we need touch screen!
I´d be glad to share our concept with anyone that might wanna think about expanding their current operations to include a coffee shop!

Next. The friggin license management and game installation in SL needs to work. Period with a LARGE period! It occured to me the other day, while I was busy with AutoIT3, that it is insane that I need to make exe files, that handle not only image mounting, reg file imports, YASU activation, CD key changing, username/password login and whatnot. WHY DO SL NOT WORK????? I purchased the friggin program in a hope that it would be fairly easy to control games and license management. It is, using AutoIT3....
SO, please figure a way to give costumers what you promised them. If a new game comes out, MAKE AN AUTOMATED LM AND GAME PROFILE IN SL IMMIDIATELY!
If you require costumers to install YASU or other securom crap, let us know. AND how to install it so it works with SL. I´ll send you all my AutoIT3 script files if you need to have a clue what I do to make stuff work. Now I only can use SL to use a license.bat file that I made myself (of course with help from this forum!) to control license, and point SL to an exe file that I made, to launch a game (look at BF2142). Sure SL works with steam games, now, but there are other games that need to work. Remember that.

Third. Export the damn thing. I need from time to time to reinstall my server because i fooked something up, or simply want to change server. I don´t want to copy a SL DB from server to server, I want to be able to export what I want, AND import them in another SL server. Say I only want to export Steam licenses, not all licenses, and import them in another SL server. Or I want to export only VIP and employees and import those in another SL server. And statistics as well.

Fourth. bandwith management. I want unlimited LAN access to my costumers pr hour, but I only want them to download, say 100MB pr hour from the internet. If a client purchase 4 hours, with 400MB download, then the client is "out of time" when reaching 4 hours or 400MB whichever comes first. If the client wishes to purchase further download, then the client is "out of time" when the 4 hours are reached, but keep the remaining download for next session (if VIP for instance). Otherwise as a pay´n´play when the time is up, the account is reset.

Fifth. I have lots of windows mobile powered devices (yes sorry I only use Ipod touch for travel and music), would be usefull with a small admin module, not able to sell POS or anything, but at least log users on/off computers or start programs (Deepfreeze on/off for instance). If it had a POS, employees could use it to take orders from gamers as well (no need to order from clients, not personal but bad service).

Sixth. Give the otion to let users log on from 1 computer, with fingerprint. Instead of username/passwords at each station, I´d like the users to have a touch screen in the lobby, where they choose at which computer to sit, then just use fingerprint to log on from. This will stop the random theft/vandalism that occur when everybody just can go upstairs, pretending to look for at computer to log on.

seventh. Patching. Instead of ALL users download the same patch, as soon as 1 client has downloaded a patch, patch the other machines as well. Well give the option to patch to each client perhaps, but we need a way to patch games, without downloading all over again. Oh and to patch, it need to unfreeze the client first...

Eight to ninetyninth.... all the other errors that all users experienced with SL 4, fix them :-)

No seriously, I got more wishes or "complaints" if you like, but these are the most important ones.

If SL 5 does not implement wish no 2, then let me know if anybody wants to support me... I´m tired of reading fixed and suggestions, and basically reinventing the wheel everytime I have a problem with a game.

Unrestricted internet access, but assign maksimum MB pr/hr

Most will probably wonder why I want to do this, but in Greenland our monthly charge for our (4Mbit) connection is 4500dkr, with 2GB free download. Further download beside the 2Gb is 0,84dkr pr MB. Last month our bill was 18.000Dkr, around 3000USD, yes three-thousand...

Thats why I am interested in knowing if Smartlaunch can be programmed to do the same as cyber cafe pro. Here the function is, that you can assign say 50MB free download pr/hr, and if this limit is reached the account is used up. Alternatively if you have bought say 3 hrs, the system can assign a value for each additional MB downloaded beside the limit. The example we tried was to reduce the remaining time with 2 minutes for each 5 MB the client exceeded the limit.

Rigth now we are using monowall and restrict almost every kind of download we can think of, but that is not good for users that want to listen to webradio or see the last news online, as these are restricted as well :angry:

So for our purpose I would LOVE to see some kind of bandwith restricting feature :)

Oh, btw if any of you know how to make some kind of plugin to solve this problem, let me know! ;)

Suggested new feature: Drag an item to a pc/Console, and track time/cost at station

Had an idea that might help with tracking console game usage and might help track other "Rentals" through SmartLaunch. What I was thinking might be handy is if one could drag an item, such as console disk, headphones, or specialty controller to a PC/Console, have that icon added to the status icon of the PC/console, and be able to track the time that item is at that station. The ability to charge based on that usage might also be handy.

Game Suggestions on User Login!

My store has a large amount of games, but only a niche group of customers who enjoy trying new ones out. Is this because people don't like trying new things out? No, it's because they need a push or a suggestion to make the leap to try a new game. When WoW, Battlefield, CS and pick-your-RTS get boring, what's a customer to do? Browse through the rather bland menu and waste precious minutes loading games that might not pique your interest at all.

It would be nice if after a customer logs in, a portion of the screen can be setup to display a magnified copy of the game box picture ID and a few descriptive sentences. Let's say I just installed the Silent Hill series or the newest RTS and I want everyone to know about it. Instead of posting physical signs everywhere for each new game(or classic old game), each week, I would prefer an [u][b]Improved News and Events Section[/b][/u] that links directly to the game like your favorites menu does, but also contains a description that the LAN center employee can edit.

Let's say user number one usually plays WoW all day, everday but you've noticed he's getting a bit bored. This would be an excellent way to expose this gamer to something new as soon as he logs on. The news and events editor in SL admin should give you the ability to add screenshots or general picture files so that we can get his attention!

Right now, the current setup is just bland. When I sit down myself, I don't even notice the news and events section : / This seems like an easy update that simply combines the functions of user favorites and the picture ID's built into smartlaunch. I'm not sure what it would take for the ability to add photos or screenshots, but I don't believe that would be terribly difficult.

There just has to be a better way to show the customers what your center offers.

The SL-Mobile Plugin & SL-Mobile Laptop Client App

Thomas, I actually have an idea I have thought about for a while (A month ago or so) about a SL-plugin/ClientMiniApp combination. Using a Manual IP/DNS assignment (ie DHCP is disabled, so IPs don't automatically get assigned. :)) The Sl-Mobile plugin will be able to reserve and assign any range of local *.*.*.### IP address's we want. :)

Now the mini-apps will have one to three
semi-hard-coded(Binary Patching?) IP address depending if multiple people are need/trying to connect at the same time and one 128bit WEP Key or another Security key type for the initial Default connection. or perhaps the plugin can be be programmed to auto insert the SL-mobile default connection info(IP&Key&SeverIP) when you first setup the plugin for your Gaming Center.
The Mobile app will also need to be able to remember what ever previous WiFi-NIC settings were set on the laptop before executing the mobile client exe, whether it was a manually setting or set to Auto-DHCP use and return those settings to what they were when the SL-Mobile_UserAccount is logged out and the app is closed.
Another note on security of connections is to gather the user's laptop(s) MAC Address and enter that into the system ie user's profile (database or separate database?).
Also it will be important on how to best integrated this info into the database... I would suggest a Either a Separate table or a Separate database file... First off adding a new column to user section of database which will contain the SL-MobileID, there will only be one per user account to link it to the other table/database, now the info to be collected/registered when some one wants to register there laptop.
At first I thought just the MAC address (possible a MobileAppID inserted directly into the MobileApp ExE itself) would be stored in the SL-Mobile_database but collecting Demographic data as well as storing the per user config data.
- OS & version (at least)
- Basic System Specs (maybe)
- Other computing Demographic(s), etc
---
- WiFi-NIC(s) MAC Address (definitely)
- and All the Data that is to be inserted (Binary Patching anyone?) per customers laptop into each custom SL-Mobile App.

Another thought is the SL-Licenses setup portion,
one Icon (license) per mobile would be a mess, make it like the console setup but have a minimum of 8 to 16 slots per Icon and possible create a $65 to $85 special Mobile License extra option as well as the regular license purchase option.
ex.
- 8 slot license $65 per license?
- 16 slot license $85 to $105 per license?

Now for the most important part, lol Self updating plugin and mobile app client. :) ^^
Both a manual and timed automatic option that works as long as the SL-server is running, it will perform an update check for updates to the SL-mobile plugin, SL-mobile_database format in case that needs to be updated, and updates to the mobile client ExE (which I have mentioned yet should probably be totally self contained, no separate cfg files).

one of the most important aspects of the mobile client app is it should be written so it Doesn't require any special run times (its too much to expect of general people) and last but not least written so that in can be compiled for Windows (win98?orWin2K->Vista64), MacOS Binary, and maybe Linux if we can get anyone to come in that is running Linux on there laptops would that be great? :D

So how's that for a in depth idea? :) It probably still needs some work I might be forgetting something you guys night think of? It would be absolutely Sweet to see one of my many Ideas take off or at least to help you guys out. :)

Suggestion: Account goes negative, option to void what they owe

Sometimes an account will go negative by mistake -- If this happens and you want to clear it without it affecting the financials, you really can't do anything about it (if you can, please enlighten me :hehe:).

I would like to see an option to void the negative balance in case it's an accident or if you wanted to give it to them gratuity for 1 reason or another.

I'm looking into getting this software for our cafe but, have a few suggestions you might have in the product that might not be listed. First is bandwidth mointoring per pc i can mointor our router for the amount we are using per pc or all together but, I dont want employees tampering with it. Do you have a feature for that if not that might be something to look into because, if someone is using too much only the i.t. will be able to find him/her. The second one is per profiles is there a feature to allocate a specific amount of space onto the server like gb per profile. The reason for that is if they get a virus and we have it on a write only server, it will only corrupt there profile in general and all week need to do is wipe there profile instead of possibly digging thou it and hunting it down.

Management Control Panel

Just thought I would contribute my two cents into the discussion here. It would be really nice to have a control panel that is only accessible to employees with a management priviledge. From this panel you could void transactions (even after the session has ended), reset balances without affecting the financials, and return products sold.

This would be infinitely useful from a management perspective in my opinion.

Application & Security Profiles

At our LAN Centre we have 2 groups of computers; Internet & Gaming. One major problem we are going to have is the Application & Security Profiles, which attach to user accounts. We have stopped IE on our gaming computers, plus other items, that we want enabled on our Internet computers. Basically I would like an option to override the Application & Security Profiles on the user account, and instead have it on the computer groups. An option in the computer groups such as "Override Application Profile with:" and drop down box of profiles, plus a check box to enable/disable it. Same thing for the Security Profile.

i thk all user will grateful for the smartlaunch are change the setting about out of order when the user is log in,but now the problem is come to me again,when before the user log in,i just put the cursor and right click,chose for out of order,at the same time,i ask a customer to log in.when the time he log in,i chose out of order at admin pc also, everything become the same problem again,the user can play for free.so hopefully smartlauch can remove the out of order button.i thk only when log in to higher priority admin account only can use the out of order button not for normal staff,anyone agree with me?

Option to disable withdraw button

I would really like an option to disable the withdraw button. Most of the time when we log in guests, say, after their time a warning message would pop up and say you have 10 mins left or even 5 depends on your option, there were many cases that the customer leaves the chair and never finish their time. The employee then WITHDRAWS the spare cash change and keep it to themselves. Although they're not stealing from me, they ARE from the customers. Any thoughts?

users can use their prepaid tickets to login. and have access to the normal windows desktop. and not the smartlaunch screnn.
i m using cafe manila and it do that for me . but i found smartlaunch and i think it is better .
i have a cafe internet and some of my users need direct access to windows desktop.

my question is smartlaunch can do that ( when users log in , the smartlaunch screen disappear giving access to windows desktop? if yes how?
if not. please think about adding this function because it is important.

Time usage improvement + ordering

So,

I did a search, and a LOOOOONNG time ago we asked for both of these suggestions, but I am going to update it and make the request again. These are BIG factors for us buying the new SL.

1. TIME and BALANCE *need* to be seperate. We run tabs (negative balances) very often with our VIP members. I want them to ALWAYS know the precise amount of time they have left. The only thing we put on a tab is food/drink/products. Time NEVER goes on tab. I think this sample is similar to MANY cafe owners and how they operate. Having time and balance seperate is a HUGE advantage to our operations.

2. Credit limit - The current 'credit limit' system isn't effective, nor does it work properly at all. The credit limit messes up the users actual balance of time. Plus, if the user GOES OVER their time limit, it DOES NOT cut them off. *** We need SL to log out the user after they hit their maximum credit limit **. If unchecked by the employee, a customer can easily go way past their max. We think this is a simple set of code to put in.

3. Finally, an ORDER REMINDER. When a user orders a product, if the employee isn't at the till and doesn't hear the voice. The order will go unchecked. We would like SL to send out a reminder tone/sound/etc once every minute (or configurable variable) to notify the staff member if an order hasn't been picked up.

Check for update to Crystal Reports

Could the SL Team do a check and see if Crystal reports can be updated?
I know there is a newer version on its official site, cost is alot O_O.

I need a way to automatically give out rewards based on definable criteria.

Like $100 spent over 30 days, gives a free day pass.

It should have either automatic reward with a notification for the counter staff AND on the customer login. So the customer knows they got something for being a return customer.

It should also have a manager mode that the manager can review all the rewards given out and be able to put some sort of color code or very visible marker so when that person comes in they are instantly recognized as a VIP customer by the staff.

I have been marketing for SL in Saudi Arabia.

I know a lot of Games Center Owners who really interested in SL .
They wanna to have it in their centers.

There 're some things they wanna to be included in SL .

1\ more details in Reports ، like : user group , name of employee , user name , ... etc

2\ Desktop mode for [u]Internet[/u] customers (because they get used to Easy Cafe) , you can put it like an option to user group application profile .

3\ Unclosed session or visible payment history.

4\ auto upgrade when customers payment history reach a certain amount. (like when customers payment reach 1000$ , he will be upgraded automatically form member to Silver member to 40% discount)

5\ Put permission for Void Transaction, or include this action in the reports . (some employee sell some product , then void the transaction to not be shown in the reports)

6\ When the owner give a client a ban , he should not be unbanned by the employee. (you should put permission for that action)

7\ You should put permission for lock and unlock accounts.

8\ Put separated waiting line for each computer groups (there 're adult group , underage group and smoke group . It can't be the same waiting line).

Hello. I'm quite new here and just starting a gaming cafe. I don't know if this has been discussed before, but I have a suggestion to get game management easier. We should have game/application database on a website or here on forums where it would be explained how to get different games, gamesaves and settings working. Wine project in open source world has a perfect example of this kind of web site:

Employee security settings?

It would be nice to see security settings for employees as well as the cafe's users.

Unfortunately we've had a few issues with illoyal employees, and we would really like to see security settings for employees.

Some of our employees would disable security settings on a client, open the task manager and kill the smartlaunch client.exe so they could let friends and mates play for free on the computers.

Legal ISSUE - SAFT

In Portugal we now have a legal issue.

Every software that deals with sells (financial management) have to generate an XML file for audit proposes that will be asked by law and taxes authority's. This law started being implemented since 01-01-2007

SAFT stands for "Standard Audit File for Tax porposes" and was created by recommendation of OCDE. I don't know if any other UE country is implementing this standard, but i know ours is unique and called SAFT-PT.
Since this is a "law made" file it's open source, but the entity that it's developing the standard is SAGE - portugal.

At this moment to implement SmartLunch i have to implement 2 financial management softwares: SmartLunch it self plus another PoS software that can generate a legal receipt for the costumer. this is not practical for the solution implementer neither to the PoS operator.

New User Agreement

When we were originally talking about verison 4, and then later when we were testing v4, there was the impression that a new user agreement screen would be available to pop up whenever a new user logged on for the first time. This would make them read the rules and click "OK" before they could begin using the system. What ever happned to this? Is it still in the works or has it been dropped?

SL Full time FTP site

Hey, i was hoping SL would actually have a full time FTP site, with login privelages.

I sometimes look for things that are required, which someone has nicely posted a small solution eg, link to a small file like TFT Key Changer, but when i find the link is just to a website that doesnt have it anymore or become a ad for porn? Come on, just easier to have a small FTP, which i still dont have a TFT key changer??

And what about SL direct? Is that ever intended to work? Or does It? Australia too far away? The idea for SL direct where you mass purchase games directly through game makers is great. Plus you would actually have a company created NODVD solution. And already setup for SL server and client, so we dont have to worry about emulation, scripts, and all other headache related issues.
